The Ways of the Word

Conversations on Italian today 13 February – 7 May 2024

CUBO in Torre Unipol - Via Larga, 8 - Bologna
13 Feb 2024 - 07 May 2024

The series The Ways of the Word, now in its fifth edition, intends to examine and discuss the theme of language and the different uses of words.

In a time in which our every word can be amplified, emphasised or betrayed on the Internet, social networks and elsewhere, a responsible use of language and words has become of greater significance and importance for each of us. A series of meetings to discuss the boundless wealth of our vocabulary, the origin of our words, their history, the context of their usage and how they have marked an era or an aspect of our society.

A lively and varied word-fest replete with useful suggestions, curious anecdotes and many surprises.

In collaboration with il Mulino Publishing House and the Libraries and Cultural Welfare Sector of the Municipality of Bologna as part of Bologna’s Pact for Reading

Tell Me How You Speak... in the Theatre

  • Tuesday 13 February 2024 at 21:00 - 22:30

The language of theatre is first and foremost dialogue: can it be a model for an era that seems to only know verbal clashes? Is theatrical Italian still plausible today? If there is "word theatre", can there also be a theatre without words? These and other inquiries will be explored in the questions that **Giuseppe Antonelli**, linguist and full professor at the **Department of Humanistic Studies of the University of Pavia**, asks **Claudio Longhi**, **Director of the Piccolo Milan Theatre** and theatre manager.

What are the words that create poetry today? Are there still poetic words and prose words? Does poetry really have anything to do with songs? What are the tools that allow us to recognize true poetry? **Giuseppe Antonelli**, linguist and full professor at the **Department of Humanistic Studies of the University of Pavia**, in dialogue with **Valerio Magrelli**, poet and literary critic.

Tell Me How You Speak...in the Newspapers

  • Tuesday 7 May 2024 at 21:00 - 22:30

The wording of newspapers is synthesis and sometimes invention - is the language of newspapers becoming more and more similar to that of short stories and novels? Does the interview now seem to be the journalistic genre par excellence? If chat-bots write the articles, will we find ourselves reading only the AI-talian produced by Artificial Intelligence? **Giuseppe Antonelli**, linguist and full professor at the **Department of Humanistic Studies of the University of Pavia**, meets with **Francesca Schianchi**, journalist.
