ONE TOO FREE. Mirrors, shadows, visions

by Alessandro Lupi - Main project as part of ART CITY Bologna 2020
20 January-30 May 2020

During Art Week 2020, the Bolognese week dedicated to art, CUBO presents the third edition of das - experimental artistic dialogues, the cross-cutting exhibition dedicated to artistic and cultural dialogue on contemporary themes. It was created as a place for comparison – of content, techniques, languages – among masters of contemporary art who are already historically established, and exponents from the new generation.

A cascade of small, light, reflective fragments woven in a thin and rarefied texture engages the public in an experience full of wonder and discovery: this is how the large personal exhibition opens, curated by Ilaria Bignotti and dedicated to the artist Alessandro Lupi (Genoa, 1975), an Italian based in Berlin, consisting of four site-specific installations inside and outside CUBO’s Spazio Arte, the Unipol Group's Corporate Museum.

The first of these is entitled Fragments of reality and extends between the nature of the garden and the architecture of the square. It is followed by three other internal installations aimed at investigating the paradigms of time and space, of image and its double, of personal identity in relation to the collective view.

The choice of title plays on the misunderstanding between English pronunciation and written form and refers to the different paradoxes in Lupi's work:
  • ONE: identity and otherness, focus on image and its double, on the often unexpressed potential of data and visions to contain insights and open up meanings that our society rapidly consumes and overcomes.
  • TOO: refers to TWO, to doubling, to the bilocation and hidden side of things, to the relationship between perception and knowledge; yet it also contains the word TOO, meaning ALSO and TOO MUCH.
  • FREE: the word FREE plays on the third step (THREE) that inspires Lupi's work: freeing creativity and imagination. A path of exploration and knowledge that the user is called on to complete, freely and consciously reworking the stimuli.
The values underlying the exhibition can be found in the broader programme of the das exhibition, which includes events where the arts are compared with new technologies, theatre, music, experimental video: from the theatrical reading Concetto and Mirrors, part of the broader project entitled Inventario PozzatiPer un omaggio della città di Bologna all’artista Concetto Pozzati  (Pozzati Inventory. For a tribute from the city of Bologna to the artist Concetto Pozzati) to the Public Programme events curated by Federica Patti, which question the public about the contamination between languages and disciplines.
