Filippo de Pisis. Birth of a Painting

curated by Ilaria Bignotti and Maddalena Tibertelli
16 October 2024 - 17 January 2025

On 18 October 2024, CUBO will inaugurate the personal exhibition of Filippo de Pisis curated by Ilaria Bignotti and Maddalena Tibertelli de Pisis and sponsored by the Filippo de Pisis Association and AitArt, the National Artist Archives Association.

A refined writer and painter with a vast culture and a profound and restless sensibility, Filippo de Pisis is one of the main figures in 20th century Italian art. He followed his creative path by elaborating on the different currents that influenced him in a unique and personal way, in an autobiographical and deeply introspective tone. The artist favoured humble, everyday subjects that he transformed into embodiments of his feelings, echoing the naturalist symbolism of Giovanni Pascoli, one of his most beloved poets.

The exhibition project is developed around the painting Landscape from 1926, belonging to the Unipol Group's artistic heritage, a reflection on the human dimension related to the majesty of nature, revealing the profound connection of man with nature and the sensitive characteristic of de Pisis' work.

The small oil on canvas converses with 17 other works from renowned national collections and organised by the curators into six exhibition sections: "Landscapes", "Things", "Flowers", "Interiors", "Seascapes" and "Animals", each of which is accompanied by a selection of literary, poetic and critical excerpts by de Pisis himself, which are a timely reflection of his paintings and reveal a deeply empathetic artist, capable of transforming pain and nostalgia into works of art charged with pathos.

In the space at Porta Europa two sections are displayed: Landscape (1926), Hermitage of Assisi (1923), Winter Farmhouse in Brugherio (1951) in the section "Landscapes", and The Glorious Loaves (1925), Still Life with Bottle (1951), The Two Tomatoes (1950), The Soul of Things (1949) and Still Life with Bottles (1952) in the section "Things".

At Torre Unipol four sections are presented: "Animals" represented by Puppy (1940); "Flowers" with Rose in Bottle (1950), White Roses (1952), Flowers in Jug (1949) and Vase of Flowers (1948); "Interiors" which includes Red Chair (1943), Second-hand Shop (1938), The Paris Studio (1926) and "Seascapes" with The Blue Letter (1952) and Still Life with Slice of Melon (1927).

The exhibition offers a journey into the painting of de Pisis, who, through the apparent simplicity of his subjects, leads us towards a more universal understanding of reality, transcending time and history.

CUBO's exhibition project is enriched by a multimedia APP created ad-hoc that allows the user to intuitively and autonomously expand the exhibition-related content – from the Apple Store and Google Play.

At the end of the exhibition the contents can be viewed on Mediarte,  an interactive application on the multimedia tables of the Mediateca containing the archive of the exhibitions held in the CUBO exhibition spaces.
