Stand Up Comedy

Creative workshop for youth aged 13-17 19 January - 23 February 2024

CUBO in Porta Europa Piazza Vieira de Mello, 5 40128 Bologna
12 Jan 2024 - 23 Feb 2024

The course is intended as an introduction to creative writing, satire and humour. Thanks to the tool of irony, participants will see how even embarrassing moments in life can actually be rewritten and transformed into comedic pieces.

The course will be divided between theoretical and practical lessons: starting from a generic study of the history of cabaret and stand up comedy, we will move on to analysing the monologues of great comedians, to then continue with becoming aware of one’s body on stage and the use of voice.
At the end of the course, participants will feel ready for a small stand-up comedy performance.

In collaboration with STUDIO K

When booking the first event, registration will be valid for the entire duration of the course

Why do we laugh?

  • Friday 12 January 2024 at 17:30 - 19:30

In the first lesson, we will immerse ourselves in the history of cabaret and stand up comedy, but above all we will try to understand the profound human connection with laughter, exploring the reasons why human beings seek relief and joy through the medium of comedy.

What makes us laugh?

  • Friday 19 January 2024 at 17:30 - 19:30

To be a good comedian, you must first be a good spectator. In this lesson we will analyse pieces of famous stand-ups and comedic stories by well-known authors. Then we will try our hand at writing in order to tap in to our comedic vein.

But where do you keep your hands?

  • Friday 26 January 2024 at 17:30 - 19:30

Comedy is not only writing but also in the body, and in this lesson the participants will examine the use of the body and voice on stage through physical theatre exercises.

Enough with tragedy (or not?)

  • Friday 9 February 2024 at 17:30 - 19:30

We will get to the heart of comedic writing as a method of sublimating one's wounds... or not. Participants will be offered exercises that allow them to choose whether to use irony to expose oneself when talking about themselves, or to hide behind surreal and invented stories.

What if no one laughs?

  • Friday 16 February 2024 at 17:30 - 19:30

We will try to understand how to manage performance anxiety and the fear of negative comments, appealing to what has been learned during the course, based on the performance of the comedic pieces that have been conceived.

Performance

  • Friday 23 February 2024 at 17:30 - 19:30

The last lesson will see the participants as the protagonists on stage, who will have the opportunity to perform their own pieces.
