How to… be ready for the future!

Teaching module for senior secondary school students 17 - 27 January 2023

Streaming
17 Jan 2023 - 27 Jan 2023

The course aims to critically and therefore philosophically analyse some of the most disruptive innovations of present and future society: Artificial Intelligence, Robotics and Gaming. To be ready to grasp the meanings, opportunities and risks of these technologies, avoiding trivialisations, it is first of all necessary to clarify what they are and in which human contexts they apply. There will be frequent opportunities to connect with some of the authors addressed in the school courses, making even the most abstract subjects, as philosophy often seems to be, feel more concrete, therefore allowing us to understand its extraordinary relevance.

Our idea of robots is often tainted by science fiction and the fear of being replaced by technologies. However, what we imagine a machine can do is very different from reality.
Let's talk about sensors, self-driving cars and social robots, anticipating some of the challenges of the future.
For example, in an increasingly ageing society, we will increasingly need robotic assistants, but how should they be designed? What are the tasks? Philosophy can become a very important lens through which to read needs, representations and responsibilities.
