Fake news and digital civic education

Teaching module for senior secondary school students 05 – 26 November 2024

Streaming
05 Nov 2024 - 26 Nov 2024

In a world that is increasingly connected, digitalised, complex and overflowing with information, knowing how to critically analyse and select web news becomes an indispensable and necessary task. In this course, we will learn how to recognise so-called fake news, understand the motivations behind it and know how to disengage the strategies through which it becomes viral.

In collaboration with Talent – Apprendere tecnologicamente

What fake news is

  • Tuesday 5 November 2024 at 10:00 - 12:00

In the first lesson, we will try to understand what fake news is, how many types exist, why it circulates, and the psychological and technological factors behind its viral nature. We will also see what digital and cultural tools are available for debunking it (advanced searches, reverse image search, URL analysis...).

Everything is true, everything is false

  • Tuesday 12 November 2024 at 10:00 - 12:00

In the second lesson we will look at how, in the age of post-truth, everything can be true and false at the same time. More specifically, we will talk about pseudoscience and conspiracy, and how to protect ourselves from fake news in science.

What can be done to combat the fake culture?

  • Tuesday 26 November 2024 at 10:00 - 12:00

The third lesson will be devoted to hate speech, i.e. speech in which false narratives and hate narratives meet. We will see how counter-narratives to hate speech can be created through targeted awareness-raising, outreach and online activism.
