Fake news and artificial truths
Teaching module for junior secondary schools 2 - 9 - 16 december 2025
We must develop a critical approach to selecting and verifying information online in order to cope with and understand the phenomenon of fake news. The course aims to investigate the mechanisms that foster its spread and the role of AI (Artificial Intelligence) in its creation and unmasking. We will learn how to acquire the tools and strategies to counter disinformation and the propagation of digital hate.

Beyond the lie: understanding disinformation

In this first lesson, we will understand what fake news is and why it spreads so easily, what types of disinformation exist and its social impact. We will look at the digital tools available to expose fake news and how to deepen fact-checking and advanced research.
AI between truth and deception

In the second lesson, we will look at the concept of post-truth and the blurred boundary between reality and manipulation. Hinting at some pseudoscience concepts, we will examine the most common conspiracy theories and the role of AI in their amplification. Lastly, we will learn how to recognise deepfakes and fake news generated by Artificial Intelligence.
Countering the culture of fake news

In the last meeting, we will learn how to construct effective counter-narratives to tackle the phenomenon of hate speech combined with fake news, when falsehoods fuel hatred. Lastly, we will see how to use the Internet to promote a culture of responsible information and digital activism.
