5 robots, 5 scientists

Robotics workshop for 13 – 17 years old Bologna, 7 March - 11 April 2025

CUBO in Torre Unipol Via Larga,8 40138 - Bologna
07 Mar 2025 - 11 Apr 2025

Science helps us to develop a better understanding of the world and the reality we live in, which is why it is fascinating, engaging and fun; in the past it has occasionally been taught without the necessary narrative connections and in a way that is not experiential, so much so that it has been unfairly classified as incomprehensible or exclusively theoretical. The lecture series “5 robots – 5 scientists” tells the stories of 5 brilliant minds and uses the Lego Mindstorm robot kits to apply the legacy left to us by scientists and mathematicians of our past directly in the field.

Block programming, with which robots are “educated”, is the brainchild of mathematicians throughout history, culminating in a rule or standard that helps us not only to understand the world, but also to enjoy our robotic afternoons.

A personal laptop is required.

Alessandro Volta and the electric battery

  • Friday 7 March 2025 at 17:00 - 19:00

Thanks to Alessandro Volta we can accumulate electrical energy and use it for our electronic devices. In this first meeting we will learn to move our robots by exploring the discovery of the Italian physicist.

Archimedes and Pi

  • Friday 14 March 2025 at 17:00 - 19:00

How can we be precise when moving our robot's wheels? Archimedes of Syracuse and the mathematical constant Pi come to our aid.

Newton, the prism and colours

  • Friday 21 March 2025 at 17:00 - 19:00

We can also use colours to communicate with robots, let's discover together how Isaac Newton helped us understand how colours are generated and composed.

Spallanzani, Langevin and ultrasound

  • Friday 28 March 2025 at 17:00 - 19:00

Could a robot find its way in the dark? Of course, with the use of ultrasound, we apply the discovery of scientists Spallanzani and Langevin, as we learn and have fun.

René Descartes and the mathematical variables 1

  • Friday 4 April 2025 at 17:00 - 19:00

How can we entrust more complex tasks to robots and enable them to make decisions? We must harness the knowledge given to us by Descartes, one of the most important mathematicians in human history.

René Descartes and the mathematical variables 2

  • Friday 11 April 2025 at 17:00 - 19:00

We wrap up our journey of discovery into science and robotics by getting our robots to complete a special mission!
