Between philosophy and wine

Wine has been a fundamental beverage since ancient times, but the Greeks were the first to give it numerous symbolic meanings. Indeed, during the symposium, a long banquet during which men of culture discussed refined philosophical, political and moral issues, wine was the indispensable element.
Participants will learn to express their emotions and opinions in order to critically analyse the problems faced and find personal and creative solutions to problems in order to construct of their own thought through open discussions with others.
The philosophical discussion will be accompanied by… a tasting of a selection of wines from Tenute del Cerro.

The aesthetic experience of wine between mind and body

Starting from the famous pages of Proust's Madelaine, the wine tasting will be the stimulus for a group reflection on the complex interactions between memory, the sense of taste and intellect in the construction of our aesthetic experience. What is the role of memory in our perception of taste? How does taste affect our memories?
Do our senses deceive us?

In an exploration of the ways in which our senses can deceive us, we pass from the classical texts of philosophy to the most recent research in sociological and neuro-scientific fields, in which prejudices influence the perception of taste. Can information on the cost and characteristics of a certain wine influence our taste and our own sensory perception?

Aesthetic-sensory pleasure

What is pleasure? Starting from the texts of classical philosophy, together we will reflect on the different variations of pleasure, focusing mainly on the distinction between kinetic pleasure (the pleasure of the senses) and katastematic pleasure (the pleasure of the soul).

Dionysus is the god of wine, drunkenness, ecstasy and liberation of the senses. According to the philosopher Nietzsche, the loss of the Dionysian spirit is at the origin of the decay of the Western world, which has thus lost its most vital spirit to be encased in forms of artificial rationality. Is this truly the case? Are there still spaces in which the Dionysian spirit can manifest itself?
From the land to the table: the time of wine

Starting from the history of the long process of wine production, from the domestication of vines to the finished product that reaches our tables, in this meeting we will ask ourselves about the relationship between human beings and nature. Who is nature for? To what extent are we entitled to modify it to adapt it to our needs?
Wine, conviviality and sociality

Wine was an essential element in the ancient Greek symposia, probably because of its ability to warm the conversational environment and create an authentic space of conviviality. And this remain just as true today: wine continues to be indispensable in our festivals and celebrations. Why is this? What is the true social power of wine? What is its symbolic value?
