The ALBERTO BURRI. From Reloaded to 'Luce sul Nero' (Light on Black)" exhibition dedicated to the Umbrian artist seeks to enter the recent critical debate through the theme of black, drawing inspiration from other recent case studies. How much does the choice of colour tell us about a piece of work, its creator, their feelings, and their era?
'Nero con punti' (Black with stitches) from 1958 by Alberto Burri, a masterpiece of the Unipol Group's Artistic Heritage, is a true black icon which plays with light, attracting the gaze of visitors who immerse themselves in the Hessian with its craters and 'wounds'. Hessian is a material that famously makes the painting one of the most important 'Sacks'. The work is set against the new exhibition display enriched with historical images of the artist, exhibition copies of important shots by leading photographers who portrayed him at different stages of his life. This new exhibition will allow us to delve into the themes and events of Alberto Burri's life and the history of the Palazzo Albizzini Foundation – 'Burri Collection', the most extensive museum of his work and one of the most important contemporary venues in Europe that preserves his memory.
The exhibition opens with a day of multidisciplinary studies in partnership with the Palazzo Albizzini Foundation – Burri Collection, moderated by exhibition curator Ilaria Bignotti. She focuses on the variations, values and meanings of black in Alberto Burri's work as a language of contemporaneity. Black read through the visual arts and the other disciplines that, from the 20th century onwards, forged increasingly fascinating relationships with painting and sculpture, such as literature and poetry, music and costume, philosophy, semiotics and architecture. The discussion day will include two sessions, morning and afternoon, to involve a wide and diverse audience. Thanks above all to the historical-critical guidance of the leading Burri expert, Professor Bruno Corà, President of the Palazzo Albizzini Foundation – Burri Collection, in dialogue with other exceptional speakers, participants will be accompanied on an unprecedented and surprising journey into the twists and turns of Nero con punti in the history of Burri and the Foundation.
