Sports journalism workshop for young people aged 13 to 17
The workshop offers an introductory course in sports journalism, with particular emphasis on television and radio commentary. The goal is to provide the tools needed to cover a sporting event with precision, appropriate pace and engagement, while simultaneously developing skills in observation, information gathering, summarising, voice usage and emotion management.
The course will analyse various styles of television and radio commentary, with a particular focus on football and a comparison with tennis to highlight their respective narrative characteristics.

The fundamentals of sports journalism

The first lesson introduces participants to the world of sports journalism, helping them understand the journalist's role and the differences between reporting, commentary and analysis. By studying the history and evolution of sports journalism, the course will examine the key television commentator roles—play-by-play commentator, colour (or expert) commentator and sideline reporter—as well as the various forms of language and narrative styles employed in sports media.

Now let’s look at the work that goes on before the live broadcast—work that is essential for crafting a clear, informed and engaging commentary. We will learn how to gather and verify information, and to study teams, players and statistics. Particular attention will be paid to the pre-match press conference—a key moment for gathering statements, insights and information useful for covering the sporting event.
The live broadcast

We will develop techniques for narrating sporting events, with the aim of helping participants make their commentary effective, clear and engaging. Key aspects will be addressed, such as voice and breath control, the pacing of the commentary, the ability to precisely describe the action and how to handle lulls on the go, all while maintaining a balance between emotion and objectivity.
Final simulation

The time has come to put it all into practice. Participants will prepare for a game, covering all the organisational and narrative phases that precede and accompany a live broadcast. Each participant will be assigned a specific role—such as play-by-play commentator, colour (or expert) commentator or sideline reporter—to enact a full simulation of a television or radio broadcast.
