CUBO at Porta Europa - Piazza Vieira de Mello 3 e 5, Bologna
18 Nov 2019 - 09 Dec 2019

As part of the Pact for Reading promoted by the Municipality of Bologna, the meetings on the theme of reading and the different forms of language continue, bringing new audiences closer to the melding of styles, to new ways of making culture, to libraries.

We’ll get closer to the world of comics with this series, observed through the different forms that have characterised its development, right up to the graphic novel and the novelties of recent years. We’ll trace its origins and the most innovative examples that have left their mark on our culture, with the words, voices and emotions of the authors.

The years of “Corriere dei ragazzi”

  • Monday 9 December 2019 at 18:00 - 19:30

Since its inception in 1908, “Corriere dei Piccoli” has been the weekly magazine that established the parameters for reading comics in Italy for years. In 1972, it gave rise to “Corriere dei Ragazzi”, an evolution that contributed to the growth of its readers of the time.
The history of these weeklies is also that of editorials engaged in the creation of educational entertainment tools (as well as the examples of the Catholic weeklies “Vittorioso” and “Il Giornalino”).

Comic books have always been an expression of history, like any language, and recount history through their works. Biographies have a privileged position in recounting history. Speaking on the topic are two Italian authors who have written biographies of controversial characters including Escobar, Tamara de Lempicka and Frida Khalo.

The adventurous origins of comics

  • Monday 2 December 2019 at 18:00 - 19:30

The comic book was born between blitzkriegs and tycoon poetics, in the midst of the changes of the industrialised West of the late 19th century and the beginnings of great publishing. One significant symbol is the first character of the new-born comic book, a mischievous boy with big ears, the ineffable Yellow Kid.
Riding the wave since 1896 between technological innovation, the fourth power of print media and social changes that put the comic book at the eye of the storm.
