The Geography of great discoveries
Teaching module for junior secondary schools 17 – 31 October 2023
The course deals with the great geographical explorations that, across time and space, have contributed to radically changing our perception of the world.
The three meetings provide students with a tool to understand the world’s complexity, interrelationships and interdependencies and contribute to forming a systemic vision of spaces, the human and natural environment.

History of the great explorations

Beginning with the history of the first explorers of antiquity, we will trace the stages of the big geographical discoveries, the great sea routes, the penetration of the Atlantic and the birth of a global communications network.
The Age of Discovery between the 15th and 18th centuries

Following in the wake of voyages outside the Mediterranean, we will find out how explorations in India, the Pacific and Australia led to new and inevitable changes, including unknown trade routes, astonishing technological advances and new cartography.
Alessandro Malaspina, a great forgotten seafarer

We look at the fascinating biography of the great Tuscan seafarer - albeit in the service of Spain - Alessandro Malaspina. From his idea of the great journey and the round-the-world expedition, we come to his years of arrest, imprisonment and exile.
