The history of Navale Assicurazioni

Merged into Unipol in 2010

Unipol and Navale Assicurazioni began their merger operation on 19 May 2010.The path that had begun more than 90 years earlier thus entered a new phase. Cassa Navale e d 'Assicurazioni was founded in Genoa on 28 January 1914, on the initiative of Cavaliere Edoardo Canali, shipowner, shipper and founder of three insurance companies (including Savoia in 1896) specialised in covering the risks associated with maritime, land and river transport. The new company was founded with a dual purpose: “to provide insurance and reinsurance in general, for people and property in both Italy and its colonies and abroad", and to offer assistance to companies for social security activities related to occupational accidents in the sector. Its services also included granting loans, guaranteed by mortgages, to shipowners (hence the particular name “Cassa", meaning fund in English). The company's symbol was a sailboat at sea and the motto: “Arma la prora e salpa verso il mondo" [Arm the prow and set sail for the world].In 1970, Navale joined Assicurazioni Generali, from which Unipol acquired the share capital majority in 2000.
