On 22 June 2003 Unipol acquired the companies Winterthur Assicurazioni and Winterthur Vita from Credit Suisse Group. The two Winterthur companies have a prestigious history: on 25 July 1919, in Milan, Lloyd Continentale Compagnia di Assicurazioni e Riassicurazioni Generali was established. The company operates in the areas of third-party liability, injuries, health, fire and theft. As the 1930s advertisement said: “… Its operations are guaranteed by the Swiss Insurance Company against Injuries in Winterthur", because control had passed into Swiss hands in 1926. The company Schweizerische Unfallversicherungs-Actiengesellschaft, later known as Winterthur Assicurazioni, was founded in the Swiss town of the same name in 1875, by financial operators and the railway industry. Winterthur's strategy, which aimed to strengthen its presence in the Italian market, led to a change in the name of Lloyd Continentale, into that of Winterthur Compagnia Italo-Svizzera di Assicurazioni Spa(15 May 1963), In 2002, the Winterthur companies were the eighth largest Italian Insurance Group with a market share of 2.3%.
